For more than two decades, information and communication technologies (ICTs) have been prominent in the hotel and similar facilities management, mainly through the use of sector focused enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, usually denominated Property Management System (PMS). However, limitations have been pointed out to these IT systems, particularly regarding the support of the ample array of accommodation businesses processes and the lack of agility to comply with the fast pace of digital innovation over the last decade. In response to these constraints, hotel companies have adopted a growing number of specific complementary solutions, whose integration with the existing portfolio is not always assured.
The absence of data and processes integration results in the loss of competitiveness, inefficiency on the performance of certain operations and in the impossibility to aggregate data in real time. In addition there have been identified difficulties of inter-organisational integration, especially with travel agencies, which is highly relevant for a business which is essentially inter-territorial in its distribution and dependent on fast, reliable and secure exchange of information, allowing for the promotion and commercialisation in different sale points.
The Hotelcracy Apps project aims to create a Software-as-a-Service platform which will allow a hotel representative to select a portfolio of best-of-breed cloud third party solutions and integrate them in a transparent way, using a homogeneous interface which standardises the user experience and abstracts the user from the underlying complexity. The various solutions will be chosen from a Marketplace, having the possibility to swap them individually according to business demands, while the migration of data will be managed by the platform. Acting as a broker between providers of software solutions and the players of the accommodation sector, and not just like another application supplier, the platform will leverage on network effects evolving through the appearance of new solutions and innovation in the existing ecosystem.
